With so many options on the market, choosing the right coffee table can feel like a daunting task. That's why we put together this easy-to-follow, 3-step guide to ensure your coffee table is the perfect fit for you and your space.
Step 1: Scale — Scale is the comparison of one object to another when the actual size is known. It's an accurate and mathematical approach to décor, aka foolproof.
Generally speaking, the length of your coffee table should be 1/2 to 2/3 the length of your sofa. The table height should be no more than 1" higher or 3" lower than your seating. In addition, we recommend that you allow 18" between the coffee table and the surrounding furniture for ease of traffic flow. Space to walk is often neglected but very important as nothing kills a vibe like having to get up mid-convo so someone can squeeze by you.

Step 2: Shape — Coffee tables can be narrowed down to 6 basic shapes: Oval, Round, Square, Rectangle, Nesting or Abstract. Most shapes can work in a variety of spaces so long as scale and proportion are respected.

Step 3: Material — Although there are some general rules of thumb, picking the material of your coffee table is when the fun comes in and your personality gets to shine.
Before you fall into a coffee table rabbit hole— first, you must narrow down your search by considering your lifestyle and how the table will be used. If you plan on eating or drinking on your table, go for a stain resistant, easy to clean material such as glass. Other stain resistant options include materials that have been properly protected with a durable finish such as polyurethane varnish on wood, or impregnating sealers on marble. Always ask if the material has been treated, never assume!
